How Do Solar-Powered LED Lights Work?

May 13, 2023

Navigation in the sea involves potential risks, especially during the nighttime. Therefore, ships and boats must be equipped with navigation lights to make the voyage safer and more secure. Self-contained solar-powered LED lights are one of the most preferred tools by mariners.

Solar-powered LED lights function by converting solar energy from the sun into electrical energy. Solar cells are made of silicon that acts as a semiconductor during the day when the sunlight hits the photovoltaic or solar panel, it causes the electrons in the silicon to become active and move around, creating a flow of electricity that is stored in the battery. So when night falls, the solar panels work as a charging device and give the power to turn on the lights.

While on the sea, where you cannot predict what might happen in the future, self-contained solar LED lights are reliable pieces of equipment to make the journey seamless. It comes with several benefits, including:

  1. Cuts down on Carbon Emission

Carbon emission from using some conventional lights causes a significant impact on the marine environment. When carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves into salt water, it reacts with water molecules and produces carbonic acid, which is harmful to the environment, especially for fishes, corals, and other creatures in the ocean. However, utilizing self-contained solar-powered LED lights cuts down on carbon emissions. The solar system does not use fossil fuels for lighting systems, which produce carbon dioxide or other pollutants. So, you can use LED lights without worrying about harming the ocean environment.

  1. Subdues Sound Pollution

Rising noise levels in the ocean can be threatening to ocean animals and ecosystems. Traditional lights do not directly cause sound pollution. But devices that use fuel to generate light, such as generators or engines, cause loud noises. Although it may not be possible to completely eliminate sound pollution, using self-contained LED lights is more suitable when it comes to reducing waste or pollutants while at sea. Unlike conventional lighting systems, solar LED lights do not require generators or other devices that cause noise. Therefore, it does not disturb the marine environment.

  1. Lowers Fuel Consumption

The rising cost of fuel has become a concerning factor for the marine industry. Hence, more and more mariners are switching to renewable energy sources. Solar energy has become a reliable source of energy as it is readily available. Self-contained solar-powered LED lights convert sunlight into electricity by using solar panels, unlike conventional lighting systems that use fossil fuels to generate electricity.

Moreover, it requires a lower amount of energy to produce the same amount of light to make it more affordable.

  1. Reduces Maintenance Cost

If you do not want to spend thousands of dollars on maintenance costs, it is better for you to employ solar-LEDlights. Unlike traditional lighting systems, such as incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes, self-contained LED lights have a longer life span. Hence, you do not need to worry about replacing the lighting system every few months. Moreover, it has lower maintenance costs as the batteries last may last anything from three or to seven years (under proper care depending on the marine environmental conditions), so you only have to clean them regularly.

  1. Enhances Safety while on the Sea

Installing lights on your ship makes your journey safer. Self-contained solar-powered LED lights assist in marking navigational aids, such as buoys and channel markers, so you can safely navigate through the ocean. Furthermore, the lighting system helps you identify potential hazards, such as shoals, rocks, and reefs to avoid collisions.
